Laboratory Applications / Freeze Drying (Lyophilization)

Lyophilization or freeze drying is a method of removing water, organic solvents and/or acids from various materials through sublimation. A freeze dryer and a vacuum pump are the necessary equipment to accomplish this.

The freeze dryer consists of a manifold for holding sample vessels and an integral refrigerated cold trap to collect the moisture as it is being removed from the sample. Researchers rely on freeze drying for sample preparation and to extend the shelf life of samples.

The three key issues to consider when selecting a vacuum pump are: (1) pumping speed, (2) ultimate pressure and (3) capability of handling solvent and corrosive vapours.
