Wastewater processing generally takes place at central processing stations. For rural locations without such access, treatment must be local - one system for say 1 to 5 dwellings. Part of this treatment process involves breaking down the organic matter with microbes. In turn these microbes need a continuous supply of oxygen to survive. The waste water is therefore continuously aerated with an external air pump running continuously or long cycles. Pressures are typically between 100 to 200 mbar with flow rates of 60 to 200 l/min.
