Vacuum is commonly used in the plastics and woodworking industries for laminating e.g. plywood, glass fibre, or pressing e.g. MDF mouldings, where the work piece is held onto the mould under vacuum. 

Dry running and oil lubricated rotary vane pumps, and side channel units would be appropriate.
